YVONNE BORRMANN
(Social Media Synonym: Yvonne von Abendsprung)
I come from a family where fishing has always been a hobby. I started actively tying flies and fly fishing about 12 years ago.
Compared to many experienced fly tiers, that’s a relatively short time, but my journey in fly tying has also been a bit unusual so far.
When I first became interested in fly tying, I familiarized myself with the technique through books. I’ve never taken a fly-tying course or watched any tutorials. The only thing I had my father show me was how to tie the finishing knot. I started tying my flies using the trial-and-error method. This approach is certainly a difficult path, but it was the right one for me. As a fly tier, I’ll always have to work with standard patterns, which definitely have their place. I love coming up with my own creative interpretations and refining them until they pass the practical test. I share my knowledge and techniques with friends and acquaintances, as well as at national and international trade shows. When well-known fly tiers in the scene acknowledge my craft, ask questions, or when fly fishermen approach me and ask, “Yvonne, do you have a new pattern again?”, I’ve come to realize that true craftsmanship requires passion, self-criticism, curiosity, and an eye for nature. I’m well aware that successful fly fishing doesn’t depend solely on the fly. You should always trust yourself and your fly a little bit. In the end, it’s always the fish that decides.
